Wednesday, July 15 Hike, Williams Canyon
Name: | Williams Canyon | |||
| Summary: | This limestone canyon running north from Manitou Springs is one of the most beautiful spots on the Front Range. It is marked “no trespassing,†but anyone can hike with permission. | |||
| Trip log: | Two to three boots. Four to 10 miles, round-trip. 800 to 2,500 feet elevation gain. | |||
| Description: | Walk up Cañon Avenue, heading north under the highway bridge. The road turns to dirt. Pass through a gate marking Cave of the Winds property, into an enchanting theater of cream-colored stone that is the heart of Williams Canyon. This hidden spot is particularly fetching early in the morning and near dusk. A mile from the start, the road makes a hairpin to the left. Turn off the road onto a clear trail that follows the canyon bottom for a mile. The trail zigzags across a flowing creek, climbing to a small waterfall that is a great stopping point. Anyone who wants to keep exploring can follow the trail farther up the canyon. It emerges three miles later on Rampart Range Road. Beware, it emerges near a shooting range. We don't recommend going all the way to the top. | |||
| details | No bikes. Info: Cave of the Winds, 685-5444. | |||
